The University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) has signed a partnership agreement on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, with Harmony Public Schools (HPS) to encourage the students of the latter to continue their study in UHV.

The agreement aims that 15 Harmony Public Students would attend UHV each year starting from this fall. Students who have the criteria of being in the top 50 percent of their class and having at least a GPA of 2.5 will have the chance to be offered expedited admissions to UHV.

Harmony Public Schools is a public charter school system based in Texas, serving from pre-K through 12th-grade students in 23 cities across the state, including Greater Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Waco, Lubbock, Odessa, Bryan, Beaumont, and the Rio Grande Valley. HPS’s curriculum focuses on STEM skills, character education, project-based learning, and college readiness.

To shorten the admission to the university, UHV also provides resources to help students, including mentorship and tutoring program. The programs aim to help HPS students to get to the university and support them to finish their degrees later. In addition, UHV will also provide two scholarships to HPS students in their freshman year, each for $3,000 or $1,200, depending on eligibility.

“UHV is proud to partner with Harmony Public Schools to offer students a path toward higher education. Harmony Public Schools has a legacy of excellence, and UHV is excited to continue that commitment by offering resources to encourage students to equip themselves for the future and pursue their educational and career goals,” said UHV President Bob Glenn.

Based on the agreement, UHV could also visit HPS district’s campuses to meet the students and their parents, discussing the importance of attending the university with programs and resources available. UHV plans to expand the program to offer opportunities for HPS staff to participate in the university for graduate degree and certifications programs.
