In this restaurant review I’m going to go over One Love Tropical Cafe located in Richmond, Texas. Keep reading to learn about the food, experience, and overall impression. Let’s get started.
The Food
One Love Tropical Cafe is a Caribbean restaurant located in Richmond, Texas. They are one of the few area Caribbean restaurants located in Richmond, though you can find many more Caribbean restaurants in Houston, Texas.
My husband and I ate here one evening and this is how the food was…
We both got fish plates. I had a tilapia plate and it was filled with two huge filets of grilled tilapia. These were probably the biggest tilapia filets that I had ever seen. It also came with rice and veggies.
My husband had a grilled red snapper plate which included rice and veggies. His plate lookEd almost identical to mine and we had to taste each piece of fish to determine what was what. We ordered takeout and have it delivered via DoorDash.
What caught my eye about One Love Tropical Café was the huge menu.
In particular, they have a huge seafood section where you can get various kinds of fish, shrimp, and a lot more.
They also have a pretty big vegetarian section where you can get assorted veggie plates, veggie quesadillas, veggie stews and more. This is the kind of menu that I can really get into. The one where I can find five or six entrees that I totally fall in love with.
We found the prices to be a little on the expensive side but, considering we ordered seafood, that might be expected.
On the menu, their appetizers include veggie spring rolls, salt fish fritters, empanadas, and more. For entrées, in addition to a huge seafood and vegetarian section, they also serve goat, combination plates with chicken and oxtails, and a lot more. They have a kids menu as well and about half a dozen items on their dessert menu.
The Experience
Our experience has not been the best.
We have eaten here two times. The first time everything was totally fine. The second time our order was a disaster.
On this one occasion they severely messed up our order. They forgot two or three of our sides and completely messed up my husband‘s order. He was really upset about it. Since we ordered delivery, there was little to be done other than getting a refund from our delivery carrier.
It felt like they really threw together our order, literally.
While their food is tasty, I would say if you go during a peak time or a busy time, make sure you check your order and if you order takeout, maybe avoid ordering altogether. It’s really not worth it if you get your mail and it’s missing multiple sides and whole parts of your order are missing as well.
Overall impression
This is one of the worst rated restaurant reviews I have done and it is a 5 out of 10 for One Love Tropical Cafe. The food is delicious. The menu is expansive and they really cater to all cuisines whether you’re a seafood lover or you are vegan or vegetarian.
However, the service and experience the second time we tried One Love Tropical Café made us not return and I don’t see us eating here again in the future unfortunately. Service really does weigh heavily.
To be fair we never ate inside at the restaurant and the experience and service inside may be totally different. Mistakes do happen and I understand that but since we are big takeout orderers, I don’t see us eating takeout from here again.
