The Atlanta Botanical Garden has opened its biggest outdoor exhibition last week. The exhibition, titled “SUPERnatural: Glass Art in Bloom”, features large-scale contemporary glass sculptures created exclusively for the garden. It will be open to the public from May 31st until October 31st.
SUPERnatural: Glass Art in Bloom brings dozens of large-scale contemporary glass sculptures by Jason Gamrath, an internationally recognized glass artist from Seattle. In this exhibition, Gamrath’s magical glass sculptures blend with the scenery as it reflects the beauty of nature. He is mainly known worldwide for his colorful approach of marrying nature with glass.
The exhibition displays 13 installations of about 150 pieces of brilliantly colorful sculptures that represent blooming plants. Out of the 150 pieces, the Seattle-based artist created 30 exclusive pieces for the garden. The sculptures are in the shapes of pitcher plants, aloes, orchids.
The garden will display Gamrath’s sculptures alongside the aerial sculptures of Patrick Shearn from Los Angeles-based Poetic Kinetics, also known for his large-scale public art pieces. Shearn’s exhibition titled “Aerial Art in Motion” features a massive, custom-created “sky net” sculpture of streamers seemingly floating above the Garden’s Storza Woods like a flock of multicolored birds.
Shearn’s installations are called “Dream Flora,” comprising of 78,033 nylon streamers which are attached to a transparent rigging system and anchored to trees by flexible ultra-light Dyneema cords. This sculpture may be viewed during regular garden hours, as well as during Cocktails in the garden from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., from May to September 2021.
