Two men were apprehended in India after being captured on camera dumping a relative who had been a victim of the pandemic into a nearby river.
Sanjay Kumar and Manoj Kumar, the perpetrators, were charged after a passerby tweeted a video of the disgusting deed on Saturday, according to India Today.
The Balrampur police detained a guy on Sunday for reportedly throwing his uncle’s body into the Rapti river after he died of respiratory problems on May 28. He was also detained along with a local who allegedly assisted him. After a video of the event, which occurred on Saturday, went popular on social media, the arrests were made.
Prem Nath Mishra, 65, died on Friday, three days after being brought to Balrampur District Hospital, due to respiratory-related complications, according to police.
The video shows the two guys, one of whom is wearing a protective bodysuit, standing in the rain on a bridge in Balrampur’s Kotwali district, preparing to drop the deceased relative’s body over the side and into the Rapti River, according to the outlet.
Premnath was identified as the deceased guy by police, although his affiliation to the suspects was not revealed.
According to India Today, Premnath was brought to the hospital on May 25 after testing positive for the fatal virus and died on Saturday while receiving treatment.
Following the release of the video, Mishra’s nephew Sanjay Kumar and a local named Manoj were charged in the Kotwali (Dehat) police station. Officials claimed the FIR was based on a complaint from an ambulance driver. The Disaster Management Act and the Epidemic Diseases Act have been used to charge the defendants.
Authorities stated his body was sent to his family for cremation, but they instead threw it into the water, according to the newspaper.
More additional 70 dead were discovered floating in the Ganga River two weeks ago, and police believe they were also victims of the infection.
