Tucked away in the Logan Street Market is a cheese oasis in Louisville, KY: Harvey's Cheese.
Harvey’s — named after the son of the owners — was the first speciality cheese shop serving our beloved River City. But, it’s not just a cheese shop: it’s a space for both turophiles and those that want to learn, grow, and deepen their knowledge of cheese.
My favorite part, however, is the family feel of the shop. The owners + staff truly make you feel at home. They are kind, open to conversation, and the friendly faces that you’d expect to meet at a public market.
At Harvey’s, you can choose from a variety of fresh cheeses, accompaniments, and pre-made cheese plates.
Oh, and you MUST order a Toastie (aka the best grilled cheese that you will ever have). They have classic offerings: the Classico (Cheddar, Smoked Mozzarella, Dried Tomato, Pesto), Swiss Fondue (Gruyere, Emmental, Cherry, Shallot), and Sweet & Stinky (Taleggio, Lemon Ricotta, Apricot, Basil), along with specials of the week.
On my most recent visit, the special was the “Kinda Cuban” (Swiss cheese, Country Ham, Slow Roasted Pork, Spicy Dijon Spread, + Pickles).
And fear not: if you’re like me and love country ham, you can add it to any of the sandwiches at Harvey’s. Loretta Lynn stated it perfectly, which I’ve said before and I’ll say again: “I love a’runnin’ barefooted through the old corn fields – and I love that country ham!”
Y’all, with confidence I can say that Harvey’s is one of the best spots in the city. What an asset to Shelby Park!
Whether you want to have a quick bite, want that special something to serve at your dinner party & impress your guests, or are a chronic foodie like myself — this is the space for you. And believe me when I say this: you will be welcomed with open arms.
