The first time I visited New York City, I have to say I was a little bit oblivous and care-free and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, it meant that I made some mistakes that could have been avoided if I paused did some research. While some mistakes are unavoidable and can't be anticipated, there are some very common mistakes that can be, here's a round up of some costly mistakes to avoid making in the Big Apple.

1.) Using a Uber or Taxi to get around New York

This had to be number one on my list. Yes, there are the famous yellow taxis which are very glamorized and a big part of New York's identity, but those can be a big nightmare. First off, not only are they expensive, you run the risk of being stuck in traffic thereby waisting your precious hours that could be spent doing something more fun or productive. If you're looking for a more cost effective and efficient way to move around New York, you should consider using the subway and getting an unlimited metro card - save time and money.

2.) Forgetting to use the New York pass when sightseeing

There are a ton of things to see and do in New York and when you're visiting for the first time, there's no point trying to see it all, especially when you do not have a lot of time. One thing you should totally do is get a New York pass and gain access to over 100+ top New York attractions. From places like the Empire State Building to Top of the Rock Observatory, you'll be spoiled for choice on all the different places you can visit. One thing though, don't forget to actually use the pass and save some money and time trying to get various tickets when you can do it in one place.

3.) Paying full price at NYC museums

Who doesn't love a good deal? I know I do. You can save some money by visiting NYC museums on the days when they offer free museum days. The only thing is that on those days the lines are always busy but you can plan ahead by trying to get to the museum before it officially opens so you can avoid longer wait times. The MET allows NYC residents to get in and offers a "pay what you wish" option so you can definitely do that if you are a resident of NYC. Try to do some research and see what museums are free on certain days and then plan around it.

4.) Spending too much time in Times Square

Yes, Times Square is colorful and vibrant and is sold to you on magazines and TVs but spending way more time than is needed in Times Square is a bad idea. An hour is a good enough time to see the place and leave, except you want to be sucked into ridiculously priced purchases and unneccessary commentaries. Spending too much time in Times Square means you have less time to explore the other fantastic places New York has to offer. Plan wisely.

5.) Driving a car in New York City

Very similar to getting a uber or taxi, is driving and renting a car in New York. Again, the subway works just fine and you can take advantage of it but also, parking can be a nightmare in New York and this is an added stressor that you probably don't want to experience. So make sure to avoid renting a car and just walking or using the subway - this will save you time and money.
