A virtual road race in honor of a fallen Marine from East Northport, and parades around Huntington will mark Memorial Day weekend.

The Christopher G. Scherer I Ran the Grid race,  in honor of Marine Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer who was killed in Iraq on July 21, 2007, raises funds for veterans’ causes. The races and related activities normally draw thousands of people but will virtual for the second year because of Covid-19 restrictions.

It is the first race in the Suffolk County veterans run series.

Road closure permits have been approved for several Memorial Day parades around Huntington.

Here are some reported so far:

CENTERPORT On Monday, the following roads will be closed between 10am and 12pm for the Centerport Fire Department Memorial Day Parade: Starting at Centershore Road, Harrison Drive & Mill Dam Road, across Mill Dam Bridge to Prospect Road, ending at Little Neck Road. Parade starts at 10:30 am HUNTINGTON VILLAGE On Monday, May 31 the following roads will be closed between 11am and 12pm for the Huntington American Legion Post 360 Memorial Day Parade: Starting at Gerard Street & West Neck Road, to Main Street, ending at Stewart Avenue.Parade starts at 11am. GREENLAWN On Monday, the following roads will be closed between 9am and 10am for the Greenlawn Fire Department Memorial Day Parade: Starting on Fenwick Street at the back of the fire house, to Broadway, south to Pulaski Road, ending at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
