Cleveland Clinic announces in a recent news release that it has named Miguel Regueiro, M.D., as the chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute (DDSI).
Dr. Regeuiro will be succeeding Matthew Walsh, M.D., who served as an interim chair since October last year and will now take the role as chair of the Department of General Surgery.

Since 2018, Dr. Regueiro has served as chair of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and vice-chair of DDSI. He is also the chair of Pier C. and Renee A. Borra Family Endowed and a professor of medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.
Dr. Regueiro’s primary research interest is inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), focusing on the course of these diseases and postoperative prevention of Crohn’s disease. He has been researching methods of prevention of postoperative Crohn’s disease, nationally and internationally.
His focus on patient-centered care and a population-health approach for chronic diseases led to a new model of healthcare delivery called a medical home for IBD that delivers integrated IBD care to patients. DDSI is looking to apply this model to other chronic gastrointestinal conditions under Dr. Regueiro’s leadership,

Furthermore, Dr. Regueiro has served as director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He served as a faculty member for nearly 20 years before joining Cleveland Clinic in 2018.
He was also a senior medical lead of specialty medical homes and was honored as the UPMC Endowed Chair for Patient-Centered Care in IBD. While at the University of Pittsburgh, he was a professor of medicine and professor of clinical and translational science.
