University of Akron’s Training Center for Fire and Hazardous Materials partners with the Canton Township Fire Department (CTFD) in Stark County, Ohio, to hold its annual Advanced Fire Training Days at the department’s Fire Administration Office and Training Facility from October 4 to 7.

UA’s Advanced Fire Training Days are conceived to give firefighters the updated skill sets to be successful first responders and give their crew vital life- and property-saving techniques. The program aims to provide “conference-level” training locally to fulfill the challenge of firefighters who attend similar out-of-state sessions.

The Advanced Training Days were first held in 2017 at the Portage Lakes Career Center. The training has become an annual event, although it was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Attendees of this year’s training will experience forcible entry and advanced survival skills, advanced search and hose line management, and live-fire training. They will need to learn courses such as a two-story “Class A” live-burn structure, self-survival mazes, on-site fire hydrants, a communications lab, and a four-story mobile training tower.

“We are excited to get back to this training and are excited to have CTFD be our premier partner in offering these classes on an annual basis. The advanced classes were created with the thought that firefighters need continuing training that is as real as possible, and we create training evolutions that give the attendees that real-life experience,” said the Chief of Training and Projects Coordinator for UA’s Fire Training Center, Matthew Claflin.

The partnership will continue providing present and future firefighters, both region and state-wide, with advanced training to extinguish a fire while saving lives, property, and the environment.
