After hearing all the hype about cheese tea, I had to try it out, and luckily there are plenty of Happy Lemon locations all over the Bay Area. This location is located in downtown Berkeley which is close to the Bart station as well as the UC Berkeley campus. As I was curious about what the cheese tasted like, the workers were extremely nice and made a sample of tea with salted cheese for me to try. Most boba places don't do this - so I was really happy that they did and appreciate the effort. I also love the interior design of this boba shop since it is filled with colorful colors and they have fruit designs everywhere. Happy Lemon has a sign with their popular drinks so I decided on A2 which is the black tea with salted cheese. You get a cute lemon sign with a number on it for the order. There is also a large TV that shows the progress of your drink.
This is my review of the black tea with salted cheese. The drink took about 5 minutes to make and comes with a lid like those to-go coffee cups where you sip it from. There are posters everywhere that show how you're supposed to drink it. You should tilt your drink 45 degrees so you get the perfect amount of both salted cheese and tea. Whoa, what an interesting combo at first. The saltiness of the cheese juxtaposes the sweetness of the tea. As weird as the combination sounds, it was amazing! Each sip makes me want to keep drinking and I can honestly finish the drink within 5-10 minutes if I do not slow down. You would think the cheese creates a salty taste to it but the tea balance it out and the taste is refreshing. I also came by another try afterward and went for the boba milk tea with puff cream and I'm not a fan. It felt like eating a soggy pastry with milk tea so I'll stick with the black or green tea with salted cheese instead for next time.
Give Happy Lemon a try for their salted cheese drinks. The workers are more than happy to make samples before you order. It is a refreshing but heavier alternative to just your classic milk tea and I feel like more boba shops are also catching on to this trend of salted cheese but nothing compares to Happy Lemon!
