I have been coming to Alpine Food Shop, known locally as “Alpine Sub”, in Elmwood Park, IL, since I was a kid. I remember my mom taking me here and getting an Italian sub with Jay's shoestring potato strings after school. Every time I walk into Alpine, it brings back great memories.
Alpine Sub has been around for decades. It has changed owners a couple of times, but no matter the owner, sandwiches, and salads taste the same. The current owners are the Bonaccorsi family.
As soon as you walk into Alpine Sub, it has an old-school feel to it that can be compared to a New York Italian deli. The secret to all of their sandwiches is the homemade oil dressing they use on their sandwiches. It does not taste like your typical Italian oil dressing, but rather, it has a very unique flavor.
When I stop in Alpine Sub, I always order their signature sandwich, which is called “The Alpine”. It consists of Ham, Salami, Capicollo, and Provolone Cheese. The sandwiches are always made fresh and delicious. I always get a side of their delicious potato salad which is fantastic. They also make their own homemade Giardiniera that you can purchase.
A helpful tip if you happen to go around lunchtime, as they get very busy, is to phone in your order. You are able to walk right in and pick your order up with no wait. A downside to this establishment is that the parking is pretty sparse.
I also like to get the 18’ inch sandwich size, as it’s perfect for leftovers. Their subs almost taste better when they are kept overnight in the refrigerator. It really allows their oil to really soak into the sandwich.
Alpine Food Shop will always be a local favorite with consistent delicious subs and salads. I will definitely be returning and I give them a rating of 8 out of 10.
