It is almost time to bid farewell to one of the best exhibits I have ever seen at any museum, ever. Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement is leaving our Nevada Museum of Art on May 30th.
My daughter and I spent the rainy Friday afternoon there taking a nice look at some of our favorites - Morgan La Fey, Medea, and Work. The exhibit is breathtaking every time. I got a membership to the museum because of it and have seen it five times. It is worth it. You will feel transported.
I am a romantic and a sociologist, so seeing these paintings and objects that represent beautiful artistic reactions to drastic societal and economic change really spoke to me. From the description: “Artists and designers explored vital concerns of their time—the relationship between art and nature, religious themes, questions of class and gender identity, the value of the handmade versus machine production, and the search for beauty in an age of industry” (Nevada Art. org).
While you are there you have to check out the other exhibits, especially Shifting Horizons which “includes a diverse range of objects—from painting and sculpture to photography and video—that capture our focus on creative interactions with natural, built, and virtual environments” (Nevadaart.org).
The gift shop is wonderful, as usual and the museum cafe is open. Take advantage of this beautiful treasure while the weather is a bit cloudy and wet, and give a virtual hug to the Victorian Radicals for me.
Following Victorian Radicals will be tough. But here’s hoping their next exhibit, Gianfranco Gorgoni: Land Art Photographs, beginning June 26th and running through January 2nd, 2022 can rise to the challenge.
