The pandemic might have slowed down the economy, but the construction scenario in Atlanta tells a different story. The city witnessed some major developments during the pandemic. According to an estimate, during the period of mid-March to mid-December last year, city officials issued permits for almost 5000 construction projects.

Several new buildings have sprung up in the city, adding to the marvelous cityscape of Atlanta. Here are the updates on these new buildings, their whereabouts, and their status.

1. 170 17th Street

It features an Atlantic Yards office building completed in 2021. It is located in the Atlantic Station neighborhood. This class-A office building was completed in 2021. It features a total area of 523,511 sq. feet. The building successfully combines the essential industrial design with the spatial requirements of a modern workspace.

It consists of open floor plates with loads of natural light. Materials used for construction are wood, concrete, and steel. This sustainable office space is built with ample green spaces and is extremely commuter-friendly.

2. 740 West Peachtree Street

The Anthem Technology Center was completed in 2020. It features a total area of 360,000 sq. feet. It is a class A office building located in Midtown. The office space was constructed by Portman Holdings. Anthem has a 100% lease on this building. Anthem operates the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia. The building houses the Anthem IT hub consisting of 3,000 employees.

3. 889 Howell Mill Road, 8 West

This building, completed in 2020, is located at the converging point of Howell Mill Road and Marietta Street. This is a prime location in the bustling Midtown of Atlanta. It is a 9-story building consisting of 200,000 sq. feet of area.

It is a mixed-use building that effectively combines industrial architecture with class A space office design. Features include a fitness center, a roof terrace, a restaurant, and outdoor seating arrangements. It also has 690 covered parking spaces for reserved parking. The parking ratio is 3:1000. The floor height is 13’6”.

4. 712 West Peachtree

The 23 story office building is adjacent to the Anthem technology center, and the Coda Tech Center. It is a Portman Holdings project, just as the Anthem tower and the Coda Tech Center. It covers an area of 310,000 sq. feet. The building shares a city block, 8th-floor exterior terrace, and an integrated lobby space with the Anthem tower. 712 West Peachtree street will offer fantastic views of Midtown and Downtown Atlanta.

It consists of more than 8000 sq. feet of retail space. The building is said to maximize a compact site area due to the vertical integration of programmatic elements. It is a transit-friendly location and is accessible from the North Avenue MARTA. It has a high walkability score and features on-site bicycle parking.

5. 551 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue

Renovation work was undertaken at the historic David. T. Howard Public School. The school’s famous alumni include Martin Luther King Jr., Lonnie King, Titus Turner, and Herman. J. Russell. It was built in 1923.

The school is named after David. T. Howard, a former slave who became a millionaire in later life. He was a philanthropist who devoted a large proportion of his wealth to the progress of the African-American community in Atlanta.

6. 1197 Peachtree Street

Jone’s Day, the 10th largest law firm in Atlanta, commissioned the construction of this 6-storied office building at 1197 Peachtree Street. It was an anticipated project for the law firm. Al LaFiandra, the partner in charge of Jone’s Day Atlanta office, had earlier commented on the project, saying that it was a perfect fit for them.

He said, “In order for us to deliver our services, it is critical for lawyers to collaborate. Having a new space, where you have the ability to meet in conference rooms and have face-to-face time with colleagues, that’s huge.”
