California is such a popular holiday destination for many reasons. Its beaches and endless coastlines are known to get crowded in summer. But there is more to do than just lying on the beach or going surfing. Have you ever considered whale watching?

The best time for whale watching in Santa Barbara is between late November until April when thousands of whales migrate to Baja California. The Pacific gray whales migrate through the channel first heading south. On their return in spring, they pass again with many newborn calves and hug the coastline while heading back to their summer home in Alaska.

The nutrient-rich water is the reason why the Santa Barbara Channel is one of the best spots for whale watching on the west coast. The water is home to hundreds of different species of marine life but also to many seabirds. Dolphins can be seen daily but with a bit of luck and in the right season one might see a whale too.

If you're coming in whale watching season and really want to see them you can also book a trip which will higher your chances of spotting one of the animals.

"A whale watching trip here combines nature, adventure and a potential glimpse of the biggest mammals on Earth." - Santa Barbara City

One of the tour companies offering whale watching trips is open all year around and promise you to see a whale. I don't think much of promises that include wildlife spotting but it has to do with the face of the currency these animal sightings occur in these waters.

Check out the website of Condor Express if you're interested in it. They have the certification to resume their trips and have a strict health protocol. Masks have to be worn at all times on deck and the boat is only getting filled to 50 percent of its capacity. Ensuring the health of their costumers the boats get sanitized and cleaned before and after each trip.

I hope you got excited about seeing whales on your next trip to Santa Barbara. As mentioned consider the times of the year and try to visit during whale season.
