Canton mother charged with killing 1-year-old using furniture

(CANTON, Ohio) A Canton mother was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder on suspicion she killed her one-year-old son after police found her walking the streets naked on Maple Avenue Northeast.

Per News 5 Cleveland, police found 24-year-old Mary Guarendi-Walker when they arrived at the 1900 block of Maple Avenue on an indecent exposure call around 5 p.m. on Monday. A Canton police news release stated that Guarendi-Walker told officers that her son had been murdered at her house down the street.

When authorities entered the woman's home through a window, they discovered the unconscious body of 18-month-old Kevin Walker Jr. under large pieces of furniture. The mother was charged with the murder felony after the baby died from severe head and body trauma at the nearby Mercy Medical Center.

Per WHBC, police are continuing to investigate and have also charged a 29-year-old man named Kevin Walker with obstructing justice when they came to the house. but did not detail how he did so. Both parents have been arrested and are currently being held at the Stark County Jail.

19 News reported that the 29-year-old father had a prior arrest in January stemming from domestic violence charages, released on a $5,000 bond after he attacked "the mother of his child whom he lives with, with multiple household items, striking her multiple times," according to police.

The fatehr was sentenced to a month, but only served three days. Records show he completed a court-mandated anger management program on April 16.
