One dead after five-vehicle crash in Phoenix; Police claim impaired driver caused crash

(PHOENIX) A five-vehicle crash in Phoenix left one person dead Sunday night, azfamily reported.

The crash happened near 27th Avenue and Camelback Road around 2 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

A white Acura was driving south on 27th Avenue and ran a red light at Camelback Road, police said. The driver crashed into a blue Chrysler sedan that was driving east. Three other cars that were stopped at the light were also hit after the initial crash.

Police said the driver of the Acura was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and is suspected of driving while impaired. The passenger in the Acura died at the scene.

The passenger was identified as 46-year-old Dereck Ashe.

The drivers of the four other vehicles were not injured, police said.
