You can come at writing with a million different approaches. You can read a million articles about what you should do.

There are thousands of articles and videos online about the subject, but will any of them actually benefit you?

After nearly a year of writing almost every day, I have learned a lot about posting online and finding a balance that works for me.

Everyone’s pace of writing is different. Everyone’s style of writing is different. Everyone writes about something different.

With all of these factors in account, here are my 3 things that every writer can do to improve.

1. Read more articles online — the ones that actually interest you.

We’ve all heard that we should read more. We all know it too.

But there’s no point in reading material that isn’t geared towards you. You won’t get excited about the content you’re about to unpack.

As an investor, sports fan, and lifelong learner, I’m constantly discovering new stories that inspire me.

Take 15 minutes every single day to just read. Not checking Facebook or Instagram while skimming an article. But read it word for word and really soak up the entire message.

2. Write at a consistent time, if you can.

We all have work, school, families, friends, and so much more going on in our lives. Writing oftentimes gets put on the backburner because most people don’t rely on it for income.

But if you want to see massive growth and improvement in your work, you’re going to have to do it more regularly.

Every week, I block out three to four days where I spend at least one hour writing intensely.

It’s better than writing each and every day. But again, this is what works for me. What may work for you could be completely different, so be sure to experiment.

3. Block out all the noise and don’t think about what anyone might say negatively about your work.

This was a really tough one for me when I first started writing.

I was fearful of the hate comments or the keyboard warrior who said something that hurt my feelings.

Now, I’m numb to the comments, both good and bad. That’s because I don’t base my self-worth based on what other people think about my ideas, morals, or values — and neither should you.

You should think about your message first rather than the type of response you’re trying to elicit from your audience.

Sit down, write, and don’t stop.

Takeaway

Life is too short to let opportunities pass you by.

It’d be a shame if you wanted to produce a portfolio of articles but were too lazy, afraid, or uninspired.

Writing has to become a habit if you want it to take you somewhere. I’m blessed to say that writing covers my rent and the rest goes towards investing.

We all start at zero. Zero articles. Zero followers. Zero people interested in our work.

It’s time to turn that all around. In writing’s case, quantity over quality is going to put you on the map more effectively.
