If you're in Lompoc for the weekend and are looking for some beach time and action on the ocean the Gaviota State Park is the perfect place to go to. It is just about half an hour's drive south of Lompoc in the beautiful Santa Barabara County.

The beach down here is unknown even to many locals which doesn't mean at all it's not worth it. You have to walk under the train tracks to get to the beach. People come here to fish or simply swim in the ocean. But if you're not a saltwater type of person you should definitely get excited about the Hot Springs.

The Gaviota Hot Springs is a small pool of sulfury water. With concrete and rocks, a nice bathing pool has been created. The water is rather warm than hot but perfect for those chilled coastal days. To get there you don't have to walk far off the trailhead. The spring is just about a mile off the trail leading to Gaviota Peak.

The coastal climate in Gaviota State Park is often characterized by unbelievably strong and cold winds. Even on some of the hottest days in Santa Barbara County, most people will choose to wear a windbreaker instead of a swimsuit.

Disregarding the weather conditions on the coast the beach and its surroundings are a popular spot for picnicking and camping. Even surf fishing can be seen here on one of those good fishing days.

The Gaviota State Park has a pier but it got damaged a few years ago during a strong storm. There have been plans to get it repaired but until this will happen the pier is remaining closed. However, there is a different spot not available where people can launch their boats from.

The Park is also known and available for walking and hiking. A certain amount of hiking trails lead across the 2,000 acres of oak woodland. The chaparral backcountry has lovely scenery to offer but is also dangerous. This part is home to mountain lions and one should always talk to the ranger before heading out on walks. The condition of the trails varies as well due to weathering.

The Overlook Fire Road is one of the trails available in the park and is a 3-mile round trip. From the top you get a stunning view across the coastline and the Channel Islands.

So if you're up for a new day trip this park should be on your list. Day visitors are welcome and depending on the state laws camping should be available soon too.
