(DETROIT) This month, the Detroit Institute of Arts is celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with multiple virtual events and performances, the Detroit Metro Times reports.

The DIA dedicated the month of May to celebrating Asian-American culture by featuring a host of cultural and educational programming. The celebration has been showcased with multiple virtual events arranged by the DIA, and will include a taiko drum musical event on Friday.

Taiko drumming is an ancient Japanese musical tradition that is designed to be experienced not only in a hearing sense, but a visual sense as well. The drumming is performed on large "odaiko" drums which elicit a loud roaring and thunderous sound, while the more measured beats come from smaller “shime-daiko” drums.

The event will stream for free Friday on the DIA's Youtube channel at 7 p.m. EST.

More information regarding Friday's taiko drum event, or any of the DIA's future virtual events can be found on their website.
