(CHICAGO) Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to be nominated as U.S. ambassador to Japan by President Joe Biden later this month, Axios reports.

Emanuel, who also served as former President Barack Obama's chief of staff and as an Illinois representative, is anticipated to be one of a number of other ambassadorship nominations Biden will announce, per The Financial Times.

He chose not to seek a third mayoral term following harsh criticism of his handling of the police killing of Laquan McDonald, a Black teenager, in 2014.

The looming announcement comes after months of speculation for the ambassador role and previous reports Emanuel was also in contention to serve as transportation secretary
