(LOS ANGELES) Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is said to be in consideration by President Joe Biden's administration for the U.S. ambassador to India role or another ambassadorship, according to NBC News.

Garcetti has served as mayor since 2013 and was previously president of the L.A. city council. He is also a political ally of Biden's and was a co-chair of his campaign.

NBC News reports the 50-year-old was widely considered to head the Transportation Department before Pete Buttigieg was nominated by Biden.

If Biden chooses to nominate Garcetti, he will need to be confirmed by the Senate.

As reports about the ambassadorship role surface, India continues to face a crisis in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Oxygen within the country is limited and hospitals are overwhelmed with patients as the death toll, reported to be 200,000, is assumed to be much higher.

Axios reports Garcetti's political vacancy could come at a critical time for California as the state deals with a recall election against Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
