Aaron Rogers wants a new contract from the Green Bay Packers but team management was looking to replace him sooner rather than later when they drafted his replacement in the 2020 draft. Rogers is in the prime of his career and playing very well. This is the source of the contention between management and the player.
Rogers finished an incredible 2021 season as the NFL MVP. He is still showing that he can play the game as a top performer. Green Bay fans will miss Rogers if he leaves anytime soon.
His final statistics for the 2021 season was completing 70 percent of his passes, he threw 4,299 yards, and had a 48-5 touchdown to interception ratio. At 37 years old, Rogers is playing at his best.
Rogers and the Packers finished first in points per game, second in passing yards, and fifth in yards per game.
Aaron Rogers was selected in the first round, 24th overall, by the Green Bay Packers in the 2005 NFL draft.
Three times in his career (2011, 2014, and 2020), Aaron Rogers has been named the NFL's Most Valuable Player by The Associated Press. He is one of only four players (since 1961) to win the league MVP three-plus times (Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady)
Rogers is also an eight-time Pro Bowler and has the highest career passing rating in NFL history.
Aaron Rogers has signed a $134 million contract extension that runs through the 2023 NFL season.
For Aaron Rogers to sit out will be tough financially. The 2020 collective bargaining agreement makes it difficult for veterans to hold out since they will be fined $50,000 for every day they sit out. Teams cannot waive the fines until the player returns.
Other quarterbacks have requested trades
There seems to be a growing trend among quarterbacks who want to get out of their contract and demand a trade. Past quarterbacks include Carson Wentz with the Philadelphia Eagles who was eventually traded to the Indianapolis Colts in the 2021 off-season. The team drafted a young quarterback, Jalen Hurts, in the second round. That rubbed Carson Wentz the wrong way since he was only drafted in the first round five years ago.
Two other quarterbacks have demanded trades but their future is still up in the air. One quarterback with the Houston Texans demanded to be traded but off the field actions have limited any movement for Deshaun Watson.
Russell Wilson with the Seattle Seahawks said if he were to be traded, he listed several teams he was open to playing for. Wilson has complained about the lack of defense on the field the team has provided.
Three reasons Aaron Rogers wants out of Green Bay
1. Last year, Green Bay traded up to draft a quarterback in the draft and no one told Arron Rogers.
2. Aaron Rogers is planning to get married to actress Shailene Woodley so his personal life could lead him out of Green Bay.
3. After winning the MVP, Aaron Rogers wanted a new contract. This is what Green Bay management needs to work out with Rogers. They need to save face with him before this drama continues any longer making them look bad.
Aaron Rogers may be trying to pull the same demand for a new contract that Tom Brady made with the New England Patriots. Brady knew he was still capable of playing but New England didn’t feel the same way. So Brady left and won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Rogers is disgruntled with the team and he has asked to be traded. It is possible Green Bay management could work things out. I’m sure they don’t want to let their star quarterback leave anytime soon.
