(LOS ANGELES) Republican California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner said female transgender athletes should be banned from competing on all-girls school sports teams.

“This is a question of fairness,” Jenner told TMZ, per Politico, on Saturday. “That’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school. It just isn’t fair, and we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools.”

Jenner's comments come amid efforts by GOP-led state legislatures across the nation to restrict transgender women and girls from playing school sports.

The former Olympic gold-medalist decathlete, transgender advocate and reality television star announced her official candidacy on April 23 to replace Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom who faces a recall election.

Equality California tweeted in response to Jenner's comments that she “is willing to sacrifice the health & well-being of #trans kids to win votes,” while Newsom “is not. It’s that simple.”
