(CLEVELAND, Ohio) The first round of the 2021 NFL Draft went as many of the experts predicted, with Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence going no. 1 overall in a draft ripe with signal-callers.
Last night's opening round tied the record for most quarterbacks taken on the first day of the draft, joining the 1999 NFL Draft in which Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNown all went in round one.
Multiple prolific college duos were reunited in the NFL, with the Bengals making history with the 5th pick. Cincinnati became the first team draft college teammates at quarterback and wide receiver in the top ten, picking LSU's Ja'Marr Chase a year after drafting his former teammate Joe Burrow no. 1 overall.
College teammates who will join each other in the NFL after Thursday night include:
- Cincinnati Bengals - Joe Burrow (QB) and Ja'Marr Chase (WR) from LSU
- Jacksonville Jaguars - Trevor Lawrence (QB) and Travis Etienne (RB) from Clemson
- Miami Dolphins - Tua Tagovailoa (QB) and Jaylen Waddle (WR) from Alabama
- Philadelphia Eagles - Jalen Hurts (QB) and DeVonta Smith (WR) from Alabama
In perhaps the biggest move of the night, the Chicago Bears traded four picks, including two first-rounders, in this and next year's draft to move up and get Ohio State Quarterback Justin Fields with the 11th pick.
The second round of the 2021 NFL Draft begins tonight at 7 p.m. EST, on ESPN.
