Amazon announced Wednesday that it's expanding its palm-scanning payment system to a Whole Foods store in Seattle.

According to the New York Post, the system uses Amazon One technology which employs high-tech imaging and algorithms to create and detect a person's palm signature.

Amazon One debuted in September and is currently used at about 12 physical Amazon stores.

First-time shoppers will be required to insert a credit card that will link to their palm print. Thereafter, customers will be able to pay for items simply by placing their palms over a scanning device, per CNBC.

The palm-scanning technology will be added as an additional payment method and the company says it will not impact the job responsibilities of employees.

Amazon also maintains that the system is "highly secure" and more private than other biometric alternatives like facial recognition.

CNBC reports that Amazon plans to sell the palm-scanning technology to retailers, stadiums and office buildings.
