(NEW YORK) New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill on Friday that will establish affordable, high-speed internet for low-income families in an effort to cut down the digital divide, according to CBS 2 New York.
The bill demands internet service providers offer a monthly plan for $15, per CBS 2. Currently, the average cost of a high-speed plan at the basic level is about $50.
“And these internet packages are often very, very expensive because they bundle it with TV, and with this, and it can be hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars per year,” Cuomo said.
New Yorkers eligible for the service under the new bill include households receiving assistance from nutrition programs, Medicaid benefits, or senior citizen and disability rent increase exemptions.
