Coca-Cola has launched a new bottle size for the first time in a decade and it's made of 100% recycled plastic material.
According to CNN, the new 13.2-ounce recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) bottles are part of Coca-Cola's several-year initiative aimed at reducing its plastic waste while attracting under 25-year-old drinkers interested in sustainable packaging.
"We've been listening to consumers and they have been telling us they want something a little smaller and a little more easy to consume," said Alpa Sutaria, Coca-Cola's general manager of sustainability per CNN. "We took this opportunity to make a bottle with plastic that's 100% recyclable."
Sutaria added in a press release, "While we still have a lot of work to do to reduce plastic waste, by educating consumers about recycling and the potential for plastic bottles to become new plastic bottles, we see this as a big move in the right direction."
Coca-Cola trademark brands including Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar and Coca-Cola flavors will debut the 13.2-oz. bottle this month in California, Florida and select states in the Northeast for the suggested retail price of $1.59.
Other sparkling beverage brands are expected to follow suit this summer.
