(SPOKANE, Wash.) Spokane police arrested a man Wednesday after he walked into the headquarters of the Spokane County Democratic Party carrying what he said was a bomb, according to The Seattle Times.

A police spokesperson said the man walked in and passed a written document to a volunteer and briefly "detained" one person as others fled the building. According to The Spokesman-Review, the man told the volunteer that the document was "a manifesto" and that he had a bomb.

Witnesses said the man's bag had wires coming out of it, and police said the man started a small fire in the building before surrendering about nine minutes after police arrived.

Nobody was seriously injured in the incident and the police bomb squad found that the bag was not explosive.

Spokane County Democrats Chair Nicole Bishop and Washington State Democrats Chair Tina Podlodowski said in a joint statement they were "relieved no one was harmed in this reprehensible act of violence."

They added, "Our primary concern is for the safety of our volunteers and the broader community of Spokane. We urge every elected official and community leader to join us in condemning this apparently politically motivated act of violence."

The state Republican minority leader, Rep. J.T. Wilcox, also condemned the incident in a statement on Twitter, according to The Times, saying, "thank goodness no one was injured. We all need to intervene whenever possible to prevent political violence. It destroys us, all the innocents and consumes its perpetrators."
