(TACOMA, Wash.) A Tacoma man was arrested early Monday morning after doubling down on an alleged car theft attempt - by stealing the car of the police officer who came to arrest him.

The scene unfolded just after 5 a.m., when an officer responded to the 1200 block of North Pearl Street for a report of a vehicle theft in progress, said Wendy Haddow of the Tacoma police, according to KATU 2. But things took a turn when, after a foot chase, the subject doubled back and stole the responding officer's car, leading other responding officers on a car chase up Interstate 5.

Arriving on the scene, the responding officer spotted the man running away on foot, and left his patrol vehicle unsecured to give chase. But the man doubled back, hopped into the officer's car and drove away.

Other officers pursued the man, according to KATU, who crashed the patrol car near the Emerald Queen Casino at about 6 a.m.

The man fled on foot again, but was caught by a K-9 unit and arrested.
