(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Lakewood Ranch High School's (LRHS's) HOSA club hosted a yellow-out on at last week's JV football game in honor of Spina Bifida awareness month.

The Florida HOSA Organization has dedicated October as Spina Bifida awareness month. HOSA is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

Spina Bifida is a birth defect where a baby's spine fails to develop properly in the womb. It can cause intellectual defects and shortens the average lifespan to 30-40 years. About 2,000 babies are born with Spina Bifida per year.

HOSA's Vice President junior Anastasia Jenkins stated, "We hope that by wearing yellow and bring awareness to Spina Bifida then hopefully in the future a cure will be found, and these children can live a long, happy life."

HOSA President junior Julia Felice said, "This cause is near and dear to our heart and we will be doing everything we can as a club to bring awareness to it not just at the ranch but in the community as well."

To support Spina Bifida donate money to the children's hospitals such as St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Shriners Hospital.

The officers of HOSA encourage any Mustangs who are interested in joining HOSA to do so now.
Felice said, "HOSA is such a unique club because it is more than just an extracurricular activity. The emotions we have shared and the memories we create have caused us to become a HOSA family."

Due to COVID-19 many things have been changed both for the club and for school in general.
"The other officers and I know how different this year has been for our members which has made us determined to make this an amazing year they won't forget," said treasurer senior Sydney Granack.
