(MAMARONECK, N.Y.) Bryson DeChambeau has won the U.S. Open, closing out Sunday’s round with a three-under 67 at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
DeChambeau, 27, trailed 21-year-old Matthew Wolff after three rounds. DeChambeau pulled ahead in the final round, turning in the only under-round score on Sunday. The last time a U.S. Open champion had the only below-par score in the final round was in 1955.
Highlights of Dechambeau's final round included an eagle onthe ninth hole.
"On 9 was when I first thought, 'OK, this could be a reality,' DeChambeau said. “I made that long eagle putt and shocked myself making it, too. I thought to myself I could do it, and then immediately after I said, 'Nope, you gotta focus on each and every hole.' I just kept telling myself 'Nope, we've got three more holes, we've got four more holes, we've got five more holes.' Whatever it was, I just had to keep focused, make sure I was executing every shot the best I possibly could."
With the victory, DeChambeau has won the first major tournament of the 2020-21 PGA season.
