AGOURA HILLS, CA – A major milestone has been reached for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing as crews begin placing soil over the massive structure, according to California Governor Gavin Newsom's office.
The crossing, spanning ten lanes of U.S. Highway 101 in Agoura Hills, will reconnect vital wildlife habitats long divided by roadways. The soil placement process, requiring approximately 6,000 cubic yards, will take several weeks to complete.
“This brings us one step closer to making our roads safer and restoring wildlife habitats,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. The National Wildlife Federation and Caltrans anticipate planting 5,000 native plants by May to further support biodiversity.
Once completed, the bridge will support mountain lions, bobcats, monarch butterflies, and other species in the Santa Monica Mountains. Groundbreaking for the project occurred on Earth Day 2022, with leadership from state agencies and conservation groups.
