Zabrina Cannady, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services of the Houston School district, says that they prepared to contain the positive COVID-19 cases from 3 different schools.

The Houston County School District has confirmed COVID-19 cases at 3 different schools, and parents were notified only 2 days after school resumed in-person. Shirley Hills Elementary, Perry Middle School, and Perry High School all have "at least one positive COVID-19 case" [13WMAZ].

The district has not yet confirmed how many positive cases there are, or if the positive cases are of students or teachers. The parents were notified by phone if their children could have been exposed, and those that were must remain out of school for 2 weeks while the schools are being disinfected.

According to the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, contract tracing has begun to decipher who could have been infected or exposed. "We are now looking at notification of any close contacts of students or staff members who self-report or it is reported to us by a parent." Cannady stated 3 cases were self-reported, and after parents learned of the positive cases, they started talking about it on social media.

Among other comments, one said "this is why I kept my kids at home. This was going to happen." [Christina Christensen.] Tonya Harris asked "what precautions will be put in place to prevent this from happening again?"

Cannady stated that "we had spent so long preparing our reopening plan and putting our protocols and procedures in place that when and if it did happen, and it happened pretty quickly, we were ready and we knew what we had to do."

According to 13WMAZ, almost 75% of the Houston School District's 30,000 students chose in-person learning, while 7,000 chose online learning this year.
